Vienna Boys Choir

Pick: Vienna Boys Choir

Details: Choral Concert. Friday, March 16  8:00 p.m. Central Piedmont Community College’s Halton Theater. Click here for more information.

Viewpoint: The fourth in the five-concert series presented by Carolina Concerts, the VBC is made up of approximately 100 singers between the ages of 10 and 14, the ensemble is divided into four choirs who give some 300 concerts and performances each year in front of close to half a million people.

The choirs’ repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets (sacred vocal compositions in polyphonic style) and lieder (art songs in German, mainly from the nineteenth century) for boys’ choir form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of quintessentially Viennese music, waltzes and polkas by Lehar, Lanner and Strauss.   In addition to commissioning new works, the Vienna Boys’ Choir also performs major choral and symphonic works; several world-music projects including songs from Uzbekistan, China, Pakistan, Iran and Tajikstan – all sung in the original languages; as well as taking part in opera performances – including Children’s Operas.
