She doesn’t work weekends

for four-fifty and tips to concede

her one extravagance to the wind.

Gusts upwards of sixty rattle plate glass,

upend planters, send news sailing.

Street signs bow in deference.

The corn-fed waitress leans into the wind

one arm over hat and head,

feet braced for twisters.

It’s all she can do to maintain her balance

to say nothing of her dignity,

but she has cats to feed.
