I'm about to push Mrs. Wheeler
back for her angiogram when her
husband leans across the stretcher
and kisses her on the forehead, then
he straightens up and looks me in the eye,
puts his hand on my shoulder and squeezes,
says you take care of her now and when I say
I will he squeezes harder, whispers she's
all I got, and leaves me with an ache
in my shoulder which will remind me
of what he said, what I promised,
and what we're dealing with here.
