Departure
February 22, 2013
With a face as intent as Bernini’s
David and a head as hard,
a worn, brown leather knap sack
rides his back, filled with tokens
of far-flung, future adventure
he’s only lived between the lines,
on the pages of graphic novels.
He shuffles up the steps,
weighed down with leaden dreams
the alchemy of hope will make golden,
freedom outside the four walls
of his father’s house. He’s headed
for the first train going,
anywhere.
